He was born in 1934. He worked as a scriptwriter and stage manager at the France Theatre, a vaudeville theatre in downtown Asakusa before becoming a writer for radio and television. He debuted in the theatre with The Belly Button of the Japanese, following it with many other highly successful plays such as The adventure of Dragon, The Blind Master Yabuhara, Makeup and a series of works about Japanese authors, Ichiyo Higuchi, Soseki Natsume and Osamu Dazai among them. A number of these plays have been performed outside Japan to great acclaim. He has won many literary prizes. In 1984 he founded Komatsuza, a theatre troupe dedicated to his work. He is also currently chairman of the Japan Pen Club.
