Jenny White - Director, British Council Cuba
Jenny grew up with a passion for theatre inspired by her grandmother who directed Shakespeare, her mother who designed sets, and her father who acted in her local theatre. Having realised early on that life on stage was somewhat challenging, she obtained a degree in the History of Art, Design and Film and worked for an exhibition design company and in galleries and museums before the theatre called, first to work for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and then for Communicado, a touring theatre company directed by Gerry Mulgrew and based in Scotland, which commissioned new writing and new music. Managing the international touring for Communicado brought her to work for the British Council, first in Japan for 10 years from 1989 to 1999 where she was responsible for the arts programme including two festivals UK90 and UK98, and then to work in Thailand in 2004, and, after a spell in London as Head Arts Development, to her current position as Director of the British Council in Cuba. With a lifelong fascination for Japanese culture and the interface between Japanese and British cultures, Jenny is delighted to continue this interest in a constructive way as a member of the board for Ichiza.
