In Japan he worked for the Black Tent Theatre for 13 years as a founder member and appeared in the most of their performances. As a producer, he negotiated with Setagaya Ward to hold their performances in one of the public parks, his activities serving as a trigger to build Setagaya Public Theatre, one of the most thriving theatres in Japan. He moved to England in 1983 and his debut in the UK was at the RSC in 1986. He produced a Japanese play in English, Epitaph for the Whales by Yoji Sakate at the Gate Theatre in 1998. He has worked at various theatres such as the Riverside Studios, the RNT, New National Theatre Tokyo, Birmingham Rep and Soho Theatre. His latest stage work, Pacific Overtures (Stephen Sondheim) at the Donmar Warehouse won the Olivier Award for Best Musical. He has also worked extensively for films including Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick), Topsy-Turvy (Mike Leigh), Code 46 (Michael Winterbottom), The Last Samurai (Edward Zwick), Memoirs of a Geisha (Bob Marshall) and The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz (Ben Hopkins).
